Music is a very personal thing; your love of jazz might be frowned upon by somebody who adores heavy rock. But no matter which genre you prefer there is no doubting certain artists are the best at what they do, perhaps the drummer from a reggae band to the rapper of a hip hop group. In this blog we hope to highlight some of the best artists of our time, and the instruments they played.
There have been some classic rock bands all over the world, and the men that stood out in front have to be celebrated. Love him or hate him Ozzy Osbourne is the archetypal rock singer, others to hold the same accolade are Freddie Mercury, Robert Plant, Jim Morrison and Bono to name just four. Along with the vocalist no rock band would be worth their salt without a killer lead guitarist and the legendary Jimi Hendrix must be top of the pile, closely followed by Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards and Pete Townsend. And finally, to finish of the rock hall of fame is the heartbeat of any band, the drummer. Who can forget the madcap antics of the who’s drummer Keith Moon, the fabulous Ginger Baker or the mind blowing John Bonham.
There have been many incredible jazz musicians in the past few decades, some of them rose to fame and others stayed in the shadows, but here are some of the best. For one of the most influential trumpeters that has ever been, Miles Davis holds the accolade, with luminaries of the genre also being John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Stan Getz, Count Basie and Benny Goodman. Some of the best jazz vocalists will live long in the memory and who can forget the raspy sounding voice of Louis Armstrong or the melancholy lilting tunes of Billie Holiday. George Benson bought jazz into the mainstream with his marvellous voice and incredible guitar playing.
Pop music really is what is popular at a particular time to the masses, but some of the greatest pop artists of all time are Abba, David Bowie, Bryan Ferry, The Beatles, The Bee Gees, Queen, Take That, Beyonce….the list is endless.
The duo has been around as long as the first arias in classical music, and some of the couples who have delighted their audiences the most must be headed by Simon & Garfunkel, the singer songwriters have produced some of the most popular songs ever and there has been no one like them since. Other great duos of our time have been The Everly Brothers, Karen and Richard Carpenter, Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, The Righteous Brothers, and Sonny and Cher.
Of course, the wonderful artists that are mentioned here are just a glimpse of the extraordinary talent that has graced auditoriums and record studios over the past few decades. It would need a library of books to do this topic justice, but at least perhaps this has whet your appetite to dust off your old vinyl and enjoy a few tunes.
