There are so many great female solo artists around the world it will be really hard to fit them into just one blog post. For that reason, this will be part one of three. To be fair, even with 3 blogs we will have only just touched on the surface of some of the best female musicians of all time!
Without question, one of the all-time greats is Whitney Houston. Whitney was born on Aug 9th, 1963 and sadly passed away well before her time on Feb 11th, 2012. Accolades from the Guinness Book of Records have cited her as the most awarded female act of all-time. Such is the popularity of this Newark, New Jersey born artist. Practically any track that Whitney turned her hand to was destined to become a top ten musical hits. Her strong voice was well suited to love songs.
There are way too many hits to cover them all, but some of her very best hits included:
- I will always love you – 1992
- I wanna dance with somebody – 1987
- Greatest love of all – 1986
- All the man that I need – 1990
- I’m your baby tonight – 1990
With album and record sales in excess of 200 million, Whitney had 11 number one hits around the world. Whitney even turned her hand to movies and TV shows; however, these were not nearly as popular as her music. In fact, The Bodyguard movie, also starring Kevin Costner was panned by critics around the globe. She had some dark times, and it was believed the influence of Bobby Brown (husband) was a large part of her struggles. Drug abuse rumours continued to circle for large parts of her life and she was never too far away from the headlines.
Another hugely popular female artist, Mariah Carey was born in Huntington, New York on 27th March 1969. The singer, songwriter, actress and producer has thought to have generated a net worth of over $500 million. It is not surprising when you understand that Maria has sold over 15,000,000 songs around the globe! Her debut studio album named after herself was released in 1990 and the lead single “Vision Of Love” raced to number one in Canada, New Zealand and the United States.
Like Whitney above, her top records are too many to mention, but include:
- All I want for Christmas – 1994
- We belong together – 2005
- Hero – 1993
- Heartbreaker – 1999
- Always be my baby – 1995
Twice married Carey has set-up several high-profile charities and believes in trying to do all she can to support those who are less well off as her. During her musical career to date she has spent no less than 79 weeks at the pinnacle position of the American Billboard-Top 100. This represents the greatest number for any artist in US charter history. Again, like Whitney Houston she has also starred in several movies, although none of these could be classed as global hits, excluding her voice role in the Lego Batman Movie of 2017.
